An information system for terrestrial algal biodiversity:
a synthesis of taxonomic, molecular and ecological information
Background
Microscopic algae have been recognized as useful tools in global change research, e.g. for monitoring water
quality by indicating trophic status, acidification, and salinization, for
reconstruction of paleoclimates through sediments, and for the assessment of
biodiversity of diverse ecosystems. The taxonomy and in particular the
nomenclature used to record these observations is often ambiguous, leading to
inconsistency in the data sets published by different researchers that need to
be calibrated and synthesized for global studies.
Objectives of the joint project
To build a comprehensive information system including a database on terrestrial micro-algae, integrating taxon, type,
name and collection data as well as ecological and molecular information. For three years five teams
have been joined in this task. The completed AlgaTerra System is available on the Internet (World Wide Web)
since 2004.
The pilot phase of the AlgaTerra information
system ended in February 2005.
